In past post we brought you the top five independent women of YouTube, so now it's only fair that we take a look at the top five independent males of YouTube, to see how they made it big.
5. "ShaneDawsonTV"
Shane Dawson joined YouTube May 8, 2008 and has uploaded 185 videos with more than 2 million subscribers and more than 600 million video views.
In a video interview by tubefilter, Dawson confesses that he was fired from his job at Jenny Craig for making a video while he was at work. He also explains how he got started in his YouTube career by posting videos about how boring his life was.
When nobody seemed interested, he tried again with wigs and costumes. Only then did viewers start to show an interest in this videos.
Dawson's most popular video was posted Sept. 12, 2008 and is titled FRED IS DEAD which has more than 20 million views.

4. "Fred"
Fred joined YouTube Oct. 1, 2005 and has uploaded 107 videos with more than 2 million subscribers and more than 8 million video views.
According to smh.com.au, Lucas Cruikshank, who was 14-years-old at the time he created the "Fred" character, plays "a six-year-old 'with anger management issues' who lives with his alcoholic mother and whose absentee father is doing time in jail."
Fred's most popular video was posted June 19, 2008 and is titled Fred Goes Swimming which has more than 55 million views.

3. "Smosh"
Smosh joined YouTube Nov. 19, 2005 and has uploaded 213 videos with more than 4 million subscribers and more than 1 billion video views.
In a YouTube interview by partnersproject, creators Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox, Smosh started as a website for Padillia, Hecox and their friends to just talk about things they were interested in.
The first videos they posted were of them lip-syncing songs like "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and "Power Rangers," eventually evolving into the Smosh that is viewed today.
Smosh's most popular video was posted May 3, 2008 and is titled Beef 'n Go which has more than 88 million views.

2. "nigahiga"
Nigahiga joined YouTube July 20, 2006 and has uploaded 106 videos with more than 4 million subscribers and more than 1 billion video views.
In a YouTube interview by partnersproject, creator Ryan Higa started out by lip-syncing a song "Circle Circle, Dot Dot," and wanted to show it to a friend. However, being that Higa was too lazy to take it over to the friend's house, he uploaded it onto YouTube.
Higa believed that only his friend would be able to view the video, only to find out a month later that it was viewed more than 5,000 times.
Nigahiga's most popular video was posted Nov. 4, 2007 and is titled How to be Gangster which has over 33 million views.
1. "RayWilliamJohnson"
RayWilliamJohnson joined YouTube May 25, 2008 and has uploaded 254 videos with more than 5 million subscribers and more than 1 billion video views.
According to Forbes.com, Johnson described his first days on YouTube consisted of him sitting in a dorm and talking about what he did in school that day or his life in general.
His audience consisted of around 30 subscribers that "meant the world" to Johnson, despite the number being so small. Eventually, Johnson formed his show "Equals Three" which combined viral videos and blogging and has expanded from there.
RayWilliamJohnson's most popular video was posted Aug. 24, 2009 and is titled DON'T CALL ME FAT!! which has more 22 million views.
